A few decisive encounters prompted Jean-André Charial to create his own wine. From his time spent with oenologist Jacques Puisais, exploring the marriage of food and wine, grew his desire to make a “gutsy wine with a strong local accent and the character of its winemaker.” Jean-Pierre Perrin, from Domaine de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Olga Raffault from Chinon provided him with invaluable technical help.

His first project at the vineyard of Château Romanin gave him the opportunity to establish the principles of winemaking that he wanted to follow. The grapevines would be cultivated using biodynamic practices. The yields would be kept deliberately low and only those grape varieties that truly reflect their terroir – their home ground -- would be planted. Biodynamics operates on the precept that the soil of the vineyard is a living thing, which interacts with the grapes planted in it. It is therefore vital to preserve the balance between soil and plants by respecting the harmony of nature and its rhythms.

The soil is treated with homeopathic preparations and the vines are treated in phase with lunar and planetary cycles. Faithful to those principles, Jean-André Charial continued applying them at the Domaine de Lauzières in 2001 and created "l'Affectif".
