VILLA BAULIEUAOC Coteaux d'Aix en Provence
For over 2,000 years, the Beaulieu vineyard has flourished in the crater of the only volcano in Provence. Established as a fiefdom by King Henri III in 1576, the estate has been owned by several great Provencal families, and their winegrowing tradition continues today.
Villa Baulieu grapes are grown in an eight-hectare vineyard at 400 metres elevation – a unique terroir of clay-and-limestone soil over volcanic basalt, with a north-eastern exposure. Because the estate is small, we can give our wines the closest care and attention, from grower to glass.
Our approach to winegrowing, which sets us apart from most of the appellation, makes our wines truly distinctive – unlike any other in Provence. Each step of the winemaking process is followed closely by our consulting wine expert, Stéphane Derenoncourt. In general, our harvest is 50% red and 50% white. We age our wines in oak barrels, giving each varietal the time it needs. The wood merely adds complexity and is never overstated in the glass.
